Slowakei engl.Unfortunately the weather did not get better during the night, it’s still grey and drab. The tent, the bikes and the meadow are still dripping wet. Furthermore, we seem to have managed to put our tent on top of an ant nest, in any case the awning is teeming with them … a real invasion!!After our morning coffee, we are busy as a bee right away, Bea starts to write the first travel report and Helle is sorting the videos and photos taken the day before.Luckily the weather brightens up and soon after the tent is (almost) dry, so that we hurry to pack everything and hit the road. Slovakia’s landscape is very easy on our eyes, we enjoy the scenery a lot, driving past fields, huge ore mines and a gigantic steel mill shortly before Kosice. Really impressive! With 300.000 inhabitants Kosice turned out to be way larger than we expected, and to make things worse, our navigation system doesn’t know the road, which Bevan messaged to us the day before. We try our luck at two gas stations, first they point us to the district of Myslava on a city map where Bevan is living. Though going towards that direction we can’t see any road sign showing the name and therefore decide to ask at another gas station. Nobody is capable of speaking any English or German, but still the two shop clerks try their very best to explain with gestures, pen and paper which way we need to go. But to no avail, it’s all Greek to us. Every customer coming in, is then asked by them if they speak English and really, a young girl speaks it perfectly. She explains us how to go on and as she is heading the same way anyway, points out that we should just follow her car. A word and a blow … Awesome! Sadly, going into the new direction, we still fail to spot Bevan’s street anywhere. To speed it up, we decide to give him a call and ask if he could pick us up somewhere. Luckily we can get him on the phone, but given our location description, he has no clue where we are at the moment. He tells us to go back to the first gas station where he will go to pick us up. Awesome, we could have saved us from all that hassle by calling earlier, but hindsight is easier than foresight, right? On the way back a Range Rover takes us over suddenly and a guy is waving from the window. Bea’s first yet correct thought „must be Bevan“, what a coincidence! Bevan’s English is perfect and he tells us to follow him. After 2 kilometers through countless back alleys we finally reach Bevan’s home. Never, we would have managed to get here by ourselves! He, his wife Laura as well as six dogs are living together in a nice house with backyard on a hill in a suburb of Kosice. Both bikes safely parked in the garage we are cordially received with chilled drinks and fresh melon. We are amazed! We get a small tour around the house also showing us the guest room. As Bevan and Laura have an appointment outside the home, we are told to just feel like home and refresh ourselves. They expect to be back in two hours when they will take us to a typical Slovakian restaurant. We can’t believe it. After no more than half an hour of getting to know each other they leave their home to us. We start unpacking and treat ourselves a nice shower. Afterwards all dogs get some fondling and we play ball with the blind dog Buffy, which catches the ball just by ear. Looks quite funny, but the dog really figured it out and can’t get enough. Helmut decides to take some photos in front of the house. Typically male, leaving front door and garden gate wide open so that straight away one of the dogs runs off. Thank god, we can lure him back into the house with a ball. After this scare we better lock the front door. Unfortunately we leave the key in the lock, making it impossible for the man of the house to come in again. Therefore he had to ring the bell at his own house when he came back to pick us up to go to the restaurant. Oh my, what an embarrassment! Bevan and Laura took us to a really nice little restaurant, where we tasted Slovakian national dishes, we can’t remember the names, though it was potato noodles with sheep‘s cheese. Same for Helmut with ham and chicken meat on top. Very yummy! Accompanied by Slovakian beer, which has a alcohol percentage of 12% and not only 5%, which really surprised us. But Bevan would only smile and say that people in Slovakia would never buy beer with as little alcohol as 5%, not wanting to waste money. We start to really like the people here! We spent a very nice evening and learnt a lot as well. They told us, how they immigrated to Slovakia from the Midwest of the US and are now living here since 15 years as missionaries of the Lutheran church. Besides other activities they work with disabled people and street kids and try to improve the situation of the gypsies in Slovakia. After our dinner at the restaurant we drove back home and used Bevan’s laptop to send a short email to our families, saying that everything is fine. Afterwards we were ready for bed, feeling really exhausted after a long day. We got up early the next morning as we planed to drive on towards the Ukraine around lunch time. But as we really had a great time the evening before and them spontaneously inviting us to stay another night to visit their horse ranch and take us around to see the city. Now that’s an offer you don’t want to turn down. After a yummy breakfast with buns and fruits we are driving towards the ranch. On the way we made a quick stop at a Lidl supermarket (big German chain, yes, even here in Slovakia) to buy some food for the day. As we were staying with them for free, the groceries were on us to show our gratitude for their great hospitality. Especially after they even treated us the restaurant dinner the day before. Driving through Kosice, Bevan had the spontaneous idea to drop by the local BMW dealer Kamil (www.k-moto.sk), a friend of him. A short phone call later and we are heading to the shop straight through the city. Actually Kamil was just about to leave for a short motorbike tour to Corsica together with some friends, but when we arrive at the shop he kindly took some time for us to see his showroom. After we tell him about our tour he really envies us and says „Screw Corsica, I’ll join you“ and calling himself a sissy as he is ‚only‘ driving to Corsica. He even gives us two T-shirt and caps with the logo of his shop. A group photo as a memory at the end, very Nice! Now we finally get some kilometers out of Kosice to the ranch. The girls want to go riding while the guys plan to repair a fence, but after about 20 minutes a heavy lightning starts together with rain, making us flee into the common room of the ranch. Back in the city it looks like the world is coming to an end, as many underpasses and roads are flooded with water and trees fell over damaging power supply lines. Wow! Lucky us, traveling in Bevan’s Jeep and not on our bikes. Bevan drives us to the main station where we can change Euro to Ukrainian Hrywna, very handy, as Bevan was warning us about the exchange offices at the border which often rip off tourists. Cause of the bad weather we have to cancel the city tour as well and drive back to the house. In the evening Bea and Laura prepare dinner while Bevan and Helle have some tech talk about the bikes and the numerous modifications on them. Typical Slovakian food is served, noodles with onions, beans, sour cream and for the guys some kind of meatballs, accompanied by a cauliflower-tomato salad with tzatziki dressing. Actually Bea wanted to prepare the salad, but somehow there must have been a misunderstanding in their communication, so that she cut the cauliflower to small bits mixing it with the dressing in a bowl, while she spread out the tomatoes on a cutting board, sprinkling it with the tzatziki dressing. Actually the tomatoes were intended to just come into the bowl as well. Was quite funny and Laura was really amused about it, while Bea blushed from embarrassment. But Laura just said that this tomato creation looks quite interesting and she would try it as well next time. After dinner Bevan tells us about his bad experiences during his own visits to the Ukraine. Numerous police stops, speed limit enforcement, very bad road conditions, many gypsies. We get quite nervous and think about going through Romania and Moldovia instead, but in the end decide to drive to Kolomnyia in the Ukraine nevertheless, where we were invited to stay a night at the Bed & Breakfast „On the Corner“ Bevan contacts an acquaintance from Odessa, which gives us some advice and recommends a good yet affordable hotel there. Furthermore we get the number of Bevan’s friend Arkadi, so that we can call him in Odessa, in case of any problem. Really nice! We once again go online shortly to contact Vitali of the B & B to tell him that we will arrive in Kolomnyia the coming day. Afterwards we call it a day, as 500 km of Ukrainian road await us the next day. back Documents required for immigration: -Route: Banovce - Prievidea - Ziar - Zvolen - Lucenec - Sobota - Kosice - MichalovceDriven kilometer from Burghausen: 1.520 KmPrice of petrol: 1,42 € (95 octane)Consumed petrol (both bikes combined) from Burghausen: 140 l / 209 €Currency: EuroLocal time: unchanged Transport: - Problems with the bikes: - Slovakia Um alle Inhalte sehen zu können, benötigen Sie den aktuellen Adobe Flash Player. |
