Preparations

back

The Background....

So everbody can understand the development und the troubles to plan such a journey, we want to tell you a little bit about the idea and the preparations.

???$§"%&/???Would we talk in little ballons, a would have been the answer from our friends, family and relatives, when we were telling them our plan to make a trip around the world with our motorcycles. Most of them asked themselves, what would bring us to do this step to leave our secure jobs, to terminate our apartment and leave our loved ones back in Germany. We would like to use the oppurtanity to tell you about the starting of our plan.Summer 2009...two different opinions, that had to be brought to one line....To go overseas with a job – best to the USA – maybe even to a german company based there, and so to learn more about the country and the people, that was Hellis plan.Bea`s plan was totally different... 1 year work & travel in Australia, that always been her biggest dream. Mostly to learn about the country, the natives and especially the foreign culture, but also to work to bring money to the travel cash box. After we were talking about this different opinions over and over again, we decided to plan a possible work & travel stay in Australia. But since Bagpacking to really Hellis thing was, we had to find an alternative... and since we both are motorcycle fans, it was found quickly: With the motorcycle through Australia that was it!We were resurging in the internet and were reading everything we found to this theme. And we were both thinking: why should we fly to Australia and buy motorcylcles there if we could drive there as well? And that was the start of our idea to drive overland with our bikes to australia … and while were at it, why don´t travel through Northamerica and one or the other country – according to our money is saying- on our journey? And besides „once around the world“ sounds much better than „half around the world“! :-)Winter 2009/2010The grey winterdays Hellis used to screw on our bikes and to make them suitable for our worldtrip. Often it is something, women don´t like at all: our buying something for the bike again already or why are u so long in the garage? But since Beas bike should be modified as well, she couldn´t say nothing. So, helli was spending lots of time with ordering parts, screwing, the internet and reading different motorcycle papers to find new ideas for the bikes. ( during this time our home breweries had nor chance to go to bankruptcy. But enough about that, than to the motorcycle changes we have lots of extra pages.February 2010In February was in Munich a Outdoorfair and a motorcycle exhibiition. We used the oportunity to inform us about the new trends, the epuipment, the transport possibilities and so on and to look for potentiell sponsors for our trip. One very funny highlight was a conversation Helli had with a ADAC (German automobile club) worker, which wanted to sell him a premium membership. After Helli was telling him what we wanted to do, he was telling us that a premium membership wouldn´t cover that and we would have to look for a special offering somewhere else, nevertheless thanks for the nice advisement. :-)March 2010Unfortunatly not a nice month for Bea, since she had to have surgery, because of the troubles with her left knee. The success of the surgery was not only important for her health, it was also important for our planned trip. Wouldn´t it go okay it wouldn´t have bursted the bubble of our dream. But toi toi toi, everything was halfway okay and Bea used the time during the hospital and rehabilitation stay to inform herself about the transport possibilities, visa, shots and all other adminstrative barriers. Not since the end of June Bea was finially healthy again and now we finially could start to test the new equipment and to train driving on gravel. More about that you can read in the chapter "Our former tours“.April to August 2010Biking, biking, biking! Of course only for testing the equipment! ;-)September 2010During that time we intensivly worked on our homepage and our equipment increase, Bea was going to diffrent (lots of them) fleamarket, to shrink our furniture and to make money for our trip.Beside all that we started in September our Russian – course. We did that at the VHS with a real nice lady that was trying not to only teach us the russian language, but to also teach us more about the country and the people from her sibirian home. And another sad news, Hellis did get rid - for our travel cash - from his green Kawa.October 2010After Helle had, at the end of September his final exam for his technician, we started at the beginning of October to a Greece Tour, to once again test our equipment and our bikes. In Albania we even could test our fresh learned russian for the first time. Which gave us a little bit the feeling, now it will start soon.*it was so good* :-)At the end of October we had our first communication with a tropical medicin doctor, to find out more about all the shots we need. *not so much fun anymore* :-)We also start to cancel our insurances and to inform landlord, employer and so on about our worldtrip.November 2010Since the beginning november, we have intensivly worked on our homepage and decided to make it in three languages. The videos for our routes and former trips are finially done to. Helli also got an extra pair of glasses for our trip and we made a examination appointment with our doctor. ;-)December 2010The last weeks had been very eventfully. On Sundaythe 12.12., punctually to the 3th advent, our homepage finally online now. But that don´t means, that it´s ready.Nearly daily we are adding news, putting the “Boarisch” or “Englisch” version online and polishing on the one orother thing like the newsletter. Our inoculation-marathon had also began. In the next few month we´ll visit our medic nearly weekly, because of the multiplicity of the countries we´ll visit, incredibly many inoculations are necessary... that´s going to befun! ;-)January 2011Cause of the busy translation-help of Herbert´s wife now we are finally able to publish the English Version of our homepage. Besides, the motorbike modifications are in their final round now. Helle is full of beans and he is starting the last backfittings on his Alperer. Moreover we are very glad because of the keen interest of our local newspapers about our journey. In the Passauer neuen Presse, the Altöttinger Wochenblatt an the online portal innsalzach24.de are very nice articles about us and our world tour. Thanks a lot!Unfortunately, Bea had to go under the knife again, because the metal plates, which she had received during her last operation in Marc 2010 had been removed now. So, nothing more should stand in the way of a problem-free metal detector test now, which is waiting for us by the one or another entry! ;-)February 2011Because of the articles in the newspapers a lot of friends, acquaintances, neighbors, colleagues at work etc. asked us about our planed journey, the why and where and a lot of other questions but many of them also have helpful suggestions and tips for us. That is a brand new but very positive experience for us!

Helle had no choice, but his sister Sandra had injected him, and she did a good job!

We enjoy a nearly vernally day in February together with our neighbors with a glas of wine & beer. Ursl, Uwe and Sarah would like to know more about our crazy motorbike world trip of their neighbors, too! :-)

Furthermore we had visited our friend Michi, owner of the Tattoo Shop “Tattoostube Waging a. See” (www.tattoo-waging.de). As a passionated motorcyclist he had been excited about our plan from a motorbike world trip and as a very special memory he had offered us to tattoo us a “goodbye-memory-tattoo”. In such a chase we don´t say no! A video about our visit by Michi in Waging and how he had “tortured” us you can find here: VideosMarch 2011Slowly the hot phase of our preparations begins.Helle still is preparing our two bikes and slowly our companions take shape. Bea´s bike now has a bigger fuel tank, too, and thanks that new 24 litre “monster” the name for her moped is decided, too: the “Dicke Rosi”! The detailed information’s about all modifications on our two bikes you can find here: Motorcycle modificationsOur latest health check ups are still outstandingand should be done. Among others, we went tothe dentist. Result of the investigation: Everythingis okay. Very good, nothing stands in the way of atoothache-free journey! The topic paperwork is making good progress, too.Among others, we had visited the local authorityto apply our passports. Because Haiming is a small hamlet and probably (almost) everyone hadread the newspaper articles about our planned worldtrip, it wasn’t surprising, that the nice employee knewabout our plan and want to know everything aboutour preparations, the planned rout etc. In this waywe want to thank her once again for her greatconsultancy and support concerning the application of our passports!April 2011At the 15. of April unfortunately we had to move out of our apartment because next tenants already had been found. A part of our belonging we already had sold on a flea market and through a big online auction house to put a little extra money in the kitty. With a heavy heart, the rest had been packaged into moving boxes and stowed by Helle´s and Bea´s parents. At this occasion we would thank all the busy removal helpers! A special thank goes to Meta and his dad by whom we could store a part of our larger furniture!Furthermore we both had handed in our notices now. At the one hand we are happy about the forthcoming time off work, but on the other hand now we really become aware that we both had terminated two really good jobs, which had given us a sense of security… And not to forget our colleagues, who we’ll miss for sure! By this way we want to thank them once again for the nice farewell and the little donation for our travel fund! May 2011Just in time to the first of Mai our bikes are finally ready and we can start to our first tour in this year! *rejoice* Moreover, we have to handle a real farewell-marathon this month. At the 13. of May wecelebrate a tranquil family-farewell-partywith all grandmas, grandpas, uncles, aunts, cousins and our parents by Helle´s parents.Just on the next day we celebrate our own farewell-party in our workshop in Haiming.Unfortunately it was quite rainy and cold but nevertheless over 100 friends, acquaintances, family and work colleagues found the way to Haming and celebrated a really great party with us! Many thanks for this great evening to you all! But, as the saying goes: all good things (or party’s) come in threes! Therefore we went to another farewell-party the very next weekend. This time Anja & Jens, our former landlords, had invited us. Together with all our former neighbours from the Castle- and the Main-Street in Haiming we spend a really great evening. We will miss you!June 2011Final spurt, final spurt!Only 18 days left until our starting date and we still have soooo much things to do!!!We still have to apply for the bank guarantee, which we need to apply for the Carnet de Passages for our motorbikes and we have to apply for our international driving license and motorbike documents at the vehicle registration office. Then we have to go to the notary to apply for a general power of attorney for our parents. Furthermore we are still waiting for some pieces of equipment, we had ordered via internet and our passports with the visa for Russia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia are still at the embassy, too.Because our "To Do List“ just will not decreasing in length we are on our feet nearly day and night, we don´t sleep more than 4 hours per night and in daytime we are running round like chickens on drugs!…Thank goodness somehow everything had become alright, although we received some things only one or two days before our departure, and so we are able to - even if we are completely knackered and overtired - start into the adventure of our lives on the 18th of June 2011!
