This approach is accepted almost everywhere!-Banks/ATMs sufficiently available throughout the country, in villages but in short supply;Attention: on the route between Chita and Khabarovsk (about 2.000 km), we didn´t found any single ATM!We found no official campsitesWild camping is possible at any time without any problemsHotels here are called "Gostiniza"; you can find some Gostiniza in every bigger city, on the countryside, however, they are relatively scarce; western standards only up from 40 € per night a personAttention: on the route between Chita and Khabarovsk (about 2.000 km) is only every 300 - 400 km one Gostiniza!Enough supermarkets in the cities, on the countryside rather scarce and sometimes quite difficult to identify as such; Russian word for supermarket is "magazin"Attention: on the route between Chita and Khabarovsk (about 2.000 km), we only found "mom and pop shops" with a very limited range!Relatively good roadsDue to some warnings by other travelers it´s better to avoid the village Mogocha on the way from Chita to Khabarovsk Tips and TricksTip 1 is quite clear: The easiest and fastest way in Eastern Europe to find a supermarket, a hotel or something else is to ASK!The Eastern Europeans are incredibly helpful and try to help as best they can!Tip 2: As long as you are looking for a quiet and secluded spot just outside the villages, wild camping is possible all over Eastern Europe without any problems!Tip 3: Traveler's checks are unnecessary, you can easily take off cash across Eastern Europe with Visa or MasterCard! The only drawback: Some Eastern European banks have Withdrawal limit, therefore, it´s better to pay higher bills up from 300 € by card.Tip 4: If you are looking for hotels in Eastern Europe, then always ask for "Gostinizas" and if you are looking for a supermarket, then is "Magazin" the right word for it!Tip 5: We have a "no-words" dictionary here, mapped in 550 colored pictures. You would hardly believe it, but this little book has proved to us in Eastern Europe often faithful service! :-)Tip 6: Especially at border crossings, it has proven to be very convenient if you have a "second budget" in the tank backpack, in which are only a few cents of the local currency and possibly a couple of euro coins. If the border guards ask for "Bagschisch", you can show them the almost empty purse keep it under their nose and explain them credible as possible that this is unfortunately the entire cash that you still possessed. In our case this has been well worked twice! :-)Tip 7:You only have to register yourself in Russia, if you stay longer than 7 working days in one place (state of 2011). So if the border guards at the exit make any difficulties due to a missing registration, they are just trying to get some "Bakschich" from tourists, which is not legal! We for example have saved all our petrol station bills in order to prove in the worst-case scenario, that we never stayed more than a few days in one place!Tip 8: In Kazakhstan, however, you have necessarily to be registered within 5 days after arrival and you need a stamp on this paper at the border crossing by Kazakh officials, otherwise you risk a punishment of 100 USD! Although some hotels tell you something different, the registration in Kazakhstan is very important!Tip 9: It is possible to conclude a motor vehicle liability insurance directly at the entry to Russia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia in a little shack just across the border (the German insurance normally already doesn´t apply for Russia!). These insurance policies costs between 15 - 20 € per bike and country. It´s up to you, if you want to conclude an insurance. Because of money reasons we decided us against an insurance and we´ve never been asked for it as well in any single police control.Motorcycle TransportSome of you are probably wondering why we shipped our bikes instead of driving through China. Basically, it is our desire to ride as much distance as possible with your own motorcycles and only if nothing else works, to transport our bikes by ship or plane from A to B. Why we still decided against crossing China with our bikes has a simple financial reasons, because if you want to do it you need:- A Chinese vehicle registration- A Chinese driver's license- A guide provided by the Chinese Government, which ensures that you don´t loose the "right way" (evil tongues say that China is just afraid about foreigner seeing too much ...")Because we cannot carry the guide on the back of our bikes, we have to rent a car for him and even hotels, food and so on ...To meet all these requirements and obligations would have cost us a five-digit euro amount, which unfortunately we cannot afford by our world travel budget, so we decided with one crying eye - China would be certainly very interesting - and a laughing one - otherwise we wouldn´t had all these great experiences in Siberia - not to pass through China.Vladivostok/ Russia - Bangkok/ ThailandIf you send your bike by air or sea freight from A to B depends inter alia on the following factors:-How long does it take to transport by ship / plane?-Can you use the idle time without the bikes useful?-How expensive is the country where you have to wait ofor your bike?-Will you transport only one or several motorcycles?-What is more important for yourself: to save money or time?Generally you can say: Air freight is usually more expensive than sea freight. But if you have only one bike to send and if the country, where you have to wait for your bike, is relatively expensive, you have to consider exactly wheter you spend as much money or more on your living costs than air freight costs would have caused! Why we have decided us to transport by container ship?1.We had a significantly better offer for the sea freight compared to air freight2.We had the opportunity to share the rented 20-foot container with other bikers3.Our target country Thailand is a very affordable travel destination4.Helles parents come to visit us at Helles 30. birthday in Thailand, so we can use at least one part of the waiting time wiselyFor those who decide to ship from Vladivostok, whether to Southeast Asia, back to Germany or to any other country in the world, we can recommend you Yuri Melinkov, our Shipping Agent of Links Ltd.
