back
So the Alp was looking when Helle bougth her in autumn 2007 – or nearly, because before her backfitting she had been creatively assaulted by an lady (as you can see because of the flowers).Short after that the rebuilding begans.
That was the first part…
The rebuilding
While the most parts had been by the power coating, the engine was checked up optically and technically and all attaching parts which were still usable had been arranged. Of course, all wearing parts (clutch, linkage, brake linings, oil and so on) had been changed by this opportunity, too.
The finishing...
A few weeks later the Alp was nearly ready, the cover parts and the gas tank had been revarnished and a new set of tires had been fitted.In this condition, the Alperer was on tour for the next 2 years, until the backfittings for our planed trip began in winter 2009/2010
Consecutively we made up a list of the backfittings for you:
- Stahlflex break pipe fore and aft (Lucas)- clevis reconditioned- fitting rear swinging fork, compression leg and wheel rim of an Africa Twin RD 04- set of rims powder coated in black and replaced with high quality steel spokes- gas tank an side covering from an Africa Twin RD 04 assembled- side covering and rear covering accordingly modified- underpressure fuel pump from an Yamaha XTZ 600 assembled- coolant compensating tank constructed and shifted (the old one had no more space because of the external compensation tank of the compression leg)- kickstand lengthened and broadened- crash bar and pannier racks made by an 18 mm stainless steel tube; (self-made)- stainless steel manifold fitted (abp-racing)- front mudguard added higher (Polysport)- new cockpit - new headlight cover (Acerbis)- Acewell tachometer unit embedded ( Louis )- heigh adjustable windshield fabricated and fixed; (self-made)- mini indicators fitted ( Louis )- Renthal Dakar aluminium handlebars attached (African Queens)- hand protectors assembled (Acerbis)- auxiliary headlights right and left assembled (Hella)- headlight protector, luggage rack, chain guard and so on fabricated in stainless steel; (self-made)- folding gear lever assembled (Touratech)- foot brake lever extention (Touratech)- 32 L aluminium panniers (Stabilo Fachmarkt), i had amplified them and riveted them again, because they aren´t very rugged- pannier mounting kit assembled (Motorradalukoffer)- adapter plate bottle holder and adapter plate spare jerrycan assembled at the panniers (Touratech);- self-made engine guard built with an 4 mm aluminium checker plate- old gas mask box as tool compartment fitted (Huntshop)- Africa Twin seat shortened and had padded it (Jungbluth);- oil temperature indicator fitted (Louis) - all bars, chain kit, fluids, wheel bearing and so on changed- all fairing parts and the fuel tank lacquered in white
And the second followed immediatelly...
Because of our concrete ideas in winter 2009 / 20010 for our great journey, we had to modify our motorbikes accordingly…Helle started in January 2010 with his Alp, because here the backfitting (we saw later) was most extensive. Originally our plan was to change the crash bars, the pannier rack and some other details, Helle couldn´t change before because of lack of time.But because of the rims were broken and the elbow had more holes than a Suisse cheese, Helle changed the rims, after that he built in a new suspension, a suitable pod, a bigger fuel tank, etcetera... the result you can see below.
- brake disk cover to protect the rear brake disk (Touratech);- center stand retrofitted, as it simplifies maintenance considerably; because of the chassis modifications, it had to be broadened and extended about 6 cm(SW-Motech);- the engine had been overhauled completely (valve clearance adjusted, carburettor synchronized, spark plugs and all liquids changed)- the cockpit had been equipped with diverse additional instruments like a navigation apparatus along with holder (Garmin 60 Csx, Touratech holder), bicycle computer with outdoor temperature display (Sigma BC 1609) and a charging voltage display. Through the charging voltage display you recognizing problems with the voltage regulator immediately;- the fork of an Africa Twin RD 03 implanted, because it has more spring deflection and a bigger brake system (it had been equipped with new guide bushings, simmerings and oil);- progressive forks, as the original had been overstrained with the full loaded motorbike during offroad passages (Wilbers);- steering head bearing replaced (Louis);- suitable brake discs from EBC installed (EBC-Brakes);- cable harness modified and provided with AMP-Superseal connectors (AMP-Superseal);- tool box holder fixed on the pannier racks (the box can only be removed by taking off the case);- ammunition box used as a tool box (waterproof, solid and, mainly, cheap)- stahlflex fuel line as a protection against rub-through (Motorrad Hofschaller)- Daytona heating grips for warm fingers all the time (Louis);- horn- and starter-protection (Africa Twin-Forum);- 35 mm handlebar adapter mounted, in this way standing during cross country drives is substantially more pleasant (Transalpforum);- broad offroad footrests for a better standing during cross country drives (Touratech);- chain tensioner made of stainless steel (for the eye) (Romatech)- quick couplings for the fuel line installed, because fuel tank dismounting is much easier now and we also can tap fuel for our fuel cooker much easier (Touratech);- the gas mask box which was fixed at the motor protection had been replaced with a lockable aluminium toolbox (special design by our friend Reini Fleischer, see support);- one more bottle cage and a holder (home built) to fix our 3 L canister mounted on our second aluminium case; - chain lubrication system from CLS installed, as this is working extremely economical and still effectively. Also the annoying chain lubrication can be omitted now and the lifetime of the chain is increasing essentially (CLS);
Here a little overview about the modifications in winter 2010/2011:
And so, Helle´s Alperer looked after it´s finish in summer 2010.After some extensively test drives Helle noticed, that there are still some things that have to be optimized and that the one or another useful things is missing. Two toolboxes or a holder for our navigation system.
And so Helle´s travelling companion looks like ready for the greatest adventure of his Alperer-life!
